What is Azoospermia?
Azoospermia is a condition where no sperm cells are found in semen, making it one of the most common causes of male infertility. It affects approximately 1% of men and 10-15% of infertile couples. This condition prevents natural conception but can be treated with advanced medical techniques.
Types of Azoospermia
- Obstructive Azoospermia: Sperm production occurs, but a blockage in the sperm ducts prevents sperm from reaching the semen.
- Non-Obstructive Azoospermia: Sperm production in the testes is either very low or absent.
Treatment for Azoospermia
Treatment depends on the underlying cause. Sperm can be retrieved through surgical techniques such as Micro TESE, PESA, TESA, and MESA. Additionally, hormone therapies may support sperm production.
How is it Diagnosed?
- Semen Analysis (Spermiogram): The first test performed to determine if sperm is present in semen.
- Hormone Tests: Testosterone, FSH, and LH levels are measured to evaluate sperm production.
- Genetic Testing: Checks for genetic abnormalities that may be affecting sperm production.
