Embryo Donation: A New Beginning with Clavis Fertility Center
Embryo donation is one of the assisted reproductive techniques used for couples or individuals unable to conceive naturally. This method involves both egg and sperm cells from donors being fertilized in a laboratory, with the resulting embryos transferred to the recipient mother’s uterus.

What is Embryo Donation?
Embryo donation is an IVF procedure that involves using both donor eggs and donor sperm. Although it combines the procedures of egg donation and sperm donation, it is a simpler treatment with a higher success rate. Additionally, the duration of stay in Cyprus for this treatment is shorter than other methods, providing both time and cost advantages for busy prospective parents.
The success rate of embryo donation is close to 90% as long as there are no issues with the uterus, making it a reliable choice for couples experiencing both egg and sperm-related infertility. Similar to the egg donation process, a donor is selected based on the physical characteristics and preferences of the recipient mother. Likewise, a sperm donor is chosen and reserved from a sperm bank according to the father’s physical traits and preferences. Once the egg donor’s treatment begins, the recipient mother’s treatment is synchronized accordingly. After approximately 11-15 days, the eggs reach maturity. If the recipient mother’s preparation phase is also suitable, the retrieved egg cells and selected sperm cells are fertilized using the microinjection method to create embryos in a laboratory environment. This process does not require the physical presence of the intended parents. On the third or preferably the fifth day of embryo development, the embryo transfer procedure is performed on the recipient mother.
Embryo donation has also become an increasingly popular option for single women in recent years.
Who Is Embryo Donation Suitable For?
Embryo donation is a preferred treatment option in the following cases:
- Individuals with No Egg or Sperm Production: Those who lack the ability to produce eggs or sperm.
- Genetic Disease Risk: Couples at risk of genetic disorders in both egg and sperm cells.
- Repeated IVF Failures: Couples who have had unsuccessful IVF attempts.
- LGBTQ+ Individuals: Same-sex couples or individuals who wish to have children.
- Advanced Age: Cases where egg and sperm quality has declined due to aging.
Embryo Donation Process
At Clavis Fertility Center, the embryo donation process consists of carefully planned and professionally managed stages:
1. MODULE (Fresh Transfer)
Once the preparation processes of both the recipient mother and the designated donor are completed in synchronization, the transfer day is scheduled, and a 2-night, 3-day treatment period in Cyprus is arranged.
Day 1
The eggs from your specially selected donor are retrieved in the early hours of the day. All procedures are conducted with great attention to confidentiality. The selected sperm sample from our bank is combined with the eggs in our laboratory by our expert embryologists. Our specialist nurses initiate the necessary medications for the rest of your treatment.
Day 2
The fertilization of the egg and sperm cells through microinjection is monitored. If successful, the number of fertilized embryos is determined. This combined cell is called an "embryo". Our embryologists will keep you informed, so please keep your phone available throughout the day.
Day 3
Your embryos are in their second day of development. While you rest at home or continue your daily activities, our expert embryologists carefully monitor your embryos. In some cases, the embryo transfer may be planned for the third day. If this occurs, our nurses will provide information about the transfer schedule and any necessary precautions for the following day.
Day 4
Your embryos have reached their third day. Their quality and count are assessed. If needed, an early transfer may be planned. Our embryologists will keep you informed of the developments.
Day 5
Your embryos are now four days old. Our nurses will inform you about your transfer schedule and the precautions you should take. Since it is advised to arrive in Cyprus a day before the procedure, our team will coordinate your travel arrangements. Upon arrival at Ercan Airport, our private transportation service will meet you. Since there is no need to visit the clinic immediately, you will be transferred to your selected accommodation in Girne or Nicosia, where you can rest for the day.
Please note that traffic in Cyprus follows the left-hand side of the road, and the steering wheels are on the right side. Be cautious while crossing streets.
Day 6
Transfer day. To maximize success and minimize the risk of multiple pregnancies, embryo transfer is typically performed on the fifth day. This is known as the blastocyst embryo transfer. It is natural to feel excitement or anxiety, and our team is here to support you.
To facilitate a smoother transfer, you must have a full bladder before the procedure. It is recommended that you drink approximately one liter of water an hour before the transfer. Once the necessary preparations are complete, you will be informed about your embryos. The transfer procedure itself takes around 10 minutes, followed by a 30-minute rest period. Afterward, you will receive guidance on post-transfer care. If your treatment includes injections, our nurses will administer them at your accommodation.
If you have additional embryos, they can be frozen for future use. This gives you the option to try again at a lower cost if needed or use the same genetic embryos for future siblings.
Day 7
With the hope of a successful procedure, it is now time for your return journey. Our private vehicle will transport you to the airport for a comfortable and hassle-free departure.
